Have you ever added the perfect caption to a tweet or Instagram and been blocked because the post exceeds the character limit? What’s up … the character count looks okay?!? How many characters are allowed?
In this article, find out how you can Calculate the exact weighted length Use a character counter tool so you will never exceed the Instagram caption limit or Twitter character limit.
How Instagram and Twitter determine character counts
Most social networks place restrictions on how many characters (letters, emojis) you can use in each post. Word count is ignored, but spaces are considered characters.
Twitter has a character limit of 280 and Instagram has a character limit of 2,200.1 However, these two social media platforms have their own way of determining the number of characters that are considered a limitation.
Consider the following post on social media with 76 characters (remember, writers’ spaces):
Since I started training to develop 🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩 ↔️ ☕☕☕☕☕☕☕
While the sentence is only 76 characters, the length of the Twitter character is 83 and the length of the characters on Instagram is 73. Both Twitter and Instagram give different weights2 For special characters, such as “à”, and emoji. For example, 🍩 has a different weight than ↔️.
It’s easy to cross the Twitter character limit, given that only 280 characters are allowed. Even Instagram posts can reach a limit of 2,200 if you share long content and use special characters or emojis.
How to Check Character Restrictions on Social Media
There are a number of popular tools invoice Twitter, but all of these tools are inaccurate to Instagram, they just give Twitter a weighted length. Instagram uses a different algorithm to calculate the maximum number of characters allowed, so answering the number on Twitter will take less advantage of the length available or your post will be rejected.
The best way to check the text above is to use ours A tool that counts Twitter and Instagram characters.
The character counter tool will let you know the exact count and whether your social media posts are valid for publication. You can add plain text, special Unicode characters and emoji.
Character counting social media API
If you prefer to use the API to check the weighted character count, such as from your app or platform, try Check the end point of Char Length. This gives you an easy way to read the API and find the character count as interpreted by social networks and if the post is valid. Just post your text and get the response back:
{
"twitterWeightedLength": 4398,
"instagramWeightedLength": 2199,
"twitterValid": false,
"instagramValid": true
}
With this you can ensure that all your posts will be successful.
1The captioning limit on Instagram is 2,200. The limit of biological characters on Instagram is 150 characters. The character limit of the Instagram username is 30. The character limit on Facebook is 63,206.
2Twitter or Instagram assign weighted values to a particular character. For example, the character “y” may be considered as 1, but the emoji ↔️ is considered as 2. This is often, but not always, due to the amount of unicodes used.
